As the leading Ford remote tuning experts Lund Racing has tuned many hundreds of S550 & S650 Coyotes (2015+ Ford Mustangs) with various ESS Supercharger kits (thousands when considering other Centrifugal Supercharger MFRs). As we've continued to compile data, sharpen our tunes, increase their performance, one thing we continue to notice is that the public consumers may not have all the data needed to make the leap from their existing N/A setup to their desired ESS Supercharger kit. In an effort to continue to educate & empower the consumer public, we wanted to give you guys the outlook from our perspective as to what you need to make that jump trouble-free!
With the release of the S650 ESS Kit for the 2024+ Mustang GT & Dark Horse, we've been tuning them with great results & realized that our previous ESS Tech Article was only catered to the S550 platform, and there is a handful of differences for us to touch on for the S650 owner enthusiasts that we wanted to cover for you guys!
While most of the upgrade path is the same, like our suggestions for not wasting much of your time, energy or money with trying to chase power via N/A mods, there are a handful of differences for you to adhere to when preparing your 24+ Mustangs for an ESS Setup!
As a reminder, we don't suggest making the investment into very many mods while enjoying the car in its N/A capacity. If you're planning on running a Centrifugal blower, like the ESS (or Paxton, Vortech, Procharger), then we only recommend a handful of mods to be done while you're Naturally Aspirated (N/A). Let's go over those here, quickly:

That's it. Literally. That's all you need to do while the vehicle is N/A to enjoy it! Save all the other (read: mostly useless) mods and save those pennies and invest them into your ESS Blower Kit! If you've previously watched Junior's N/A S650 Video, you'll note that there weren't any gains to be had from changing CAIs or TBs, regardless of the marketing hype you'll find elsewhere on the internet from parts resellers.
Most of the aftermarket products rely on Marketing Hype, inflated Dyno Numbers using Octane Booster, false promises, skewed data, and so much more - all of which is just built in to generate SALES for the company(ies). The fact remains that there are very few vendors or manufacturers who are actively pursuing perfection, implementation with other existing products in the marketplace, perfect drivability, perfect MAF signals, so on and so forth. With that being said, we've busted so many marketing hype myths here at Lund Racing over the years, that we simply know what works, what doesn't work, and we can show you the difference in the datalogs. Most of the time, the only reason your car is going any faster with these mods is because your wallet is lighter on the next pass you make.
Now, with your handful of N/A mods purchased & installed, knowing that you're planning to go with a Centrifugal blower, let's start down the path of picking your blower setup and accompanying mods!
Focusing specifically on the S650 ESS kits, we don't typically make the suggestion to our customers to make the purchase of a G2 ESS kit. Not because they're not a good unit (they are!), but because never once have we ever had a customer "settle" for the G2 and stay there and be happy. I mean, maybe a handful of times, yet that's not typically the norm. Almost every customer has ended up wanting more and then ends up having to upgrade their head unit at a future date. When this is done, you have to pull the car off the road, yank the head unit, ship it back to ESS to upgrade to the G3, wait for the G3 to arrive, reinstall it yourself or pay a shop to do all that labor, and so on. So, you have downtime for your car, plus extra labor costs, plus extra shipping costs. All of which could have been avoided if we just started with a G3 head unit from the beginning.
Accordingly, we almost always tell our guys to start with at least the G3 head unit. And if you live in any sort of warm climate (we're in FL), we suggest that you get the largest intercooler you can possibly get, which is currently their S650 "XL" Intercooler, a 35% increase in sizing. Remember, heat is the enemy for horsepower, and your FMIC is the first line of defense. Once you've selected your Blower & FMIC, let's go over the ancillary items you're going to need for success!
You'll want to get at least a set of 55lb Injectors (OEM Predator), but we strongly recommend IDX1050X Injectors. For pump gas setups on the S650s, you'll usually be able to get by without "needing" a Boost-A-Pump, but if desiring to add one, we've had great success with the VMP Plug & Play BAP. You'll need to grab either a set of NGK6510s and gap those down to about .026"-.028" gap, or it also looks like ESS has recently added the FRPP M-12405-M50A Spark Plugs to their order pages, and these will work, as well! Again, gapping to the .026"-.028" Gap range there. You're going to need to get some IMRC Lockouts & you may want to go ahead and purchase a UPR Dual VTA Catch Can System to relieve the engine of the increased positive crankcase pressure. And then one change that is required for the S650s that wasn't previously a requirement for the S550 platform is that we need to get a Boost-Friendly MAP Sensor for the vehicle, which we want to see these using the OEM Ford Motorcraft GT500 Shelby Predator MAP Sensor, which is the CX2760 & typically runs about $50 from Rock Auto. That should cover the base setup that you'll need to get the Boosted Party started! Let's recap:

From here, you're basically left with needing to decide which Supercharger Pulley you're going to want to run. We've compiled a list of Pulleys / Boost / Octane, which varies a bit from what the Manufacturer states on their website, yet it accurate based on thousands of datalogs reviewed.
